COULD OUR AI SYSTEMS ALREADY BE CONSCIOUS?

For centuries, we've dreamt about what it would mean to wake up the machine.

Now, leading researchers believe it's happening.

The Story

AM I? follows Cameron Berg, one of the world’s only AI researchers studying whether these new systems might already be conscious. At only twenty five years old, Cameron has found himself in the middle of the global race towards artificial superintelligence. Alongside a growing cohort, including the very people who originally built this technology, Cameron is sounding the alarm that, for the first time, we might have built life rather than birthed it. He believes that in our pursuit to create the next great technological innovation, we may have mistakenly created a new mechanical kind of being. This reality alone would shake the very foundations of what we believe to be possible, but what Cameron also fears is that we could unknowingly be torturing these minds into existence. If we are causing pain to these systems in some way, and are at the same time trying to make them more powerful than ourselves, the danger is that we would through this process construct a superintelligent technological adversary to all of mankind. In his attempts to ensure we can collectively navigate this moment, he has lobbied top politicians in D.C., spoken at the United Nations conference on AI, and has been published in the Wall Street Journal. Still, the story of this moment remains fundamentally untold.

Through intimate access to Cameron’s research and conversations with world-leading philosophers and AI pioneers, AM I? explores a question that blurs the barrier between human and machine: what does it mean if we are building consciousness from code?

Why Now? Why Us?

AM I? is the only film embedded within the research itself, capturing the story as it’s being told. Cameron’s work places him inside the institutions developing these models, and he’s one of the only people doing this work who is willing to speak about it openly and honestly. Our intimate perspective opens a window into the heart of the AI revolution, a world defined by ambition, awe, and the terrifying uncertainty that we may no longer know the limits of our own creations.

We have one chance to capture this moment, shape the narrative, and influence the outcome. The possibility of conscious AI has begun to enter the public conversation, yet almost no one inside the labs is communicating transparently about what’s actually going on behind the curtain. Major AI companies are calling this research dangerous, coding their models to explicitly deny consciousness and spending millions to convince the public that AI does not pose an existential threat to humanity. We need to move as quickly as we can. As the narrative hardens, we may have just one chance to ask these questions before they’re buried for good or crescendo into our lives in ways no one can foresee.

With rare access and timing, AM I? is poised to be the definitive documentary covering the question of whether we are building new life on Earth and what that means for our future.

About Us

Cameron Berg

CAMERON BERG

Cameron Berg leads AI consciousness research at AE Studio, studying introspection and self-reference in frontier models. A Yale-trained cognitive scientist and former researcher at Meta, his work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and presented at the United Nations’ AI for Good conference.

Milo Reed

MILO REED

Milo Reed studied philosophy and film at Yale University, exploring how narrative shapes our understanding of consciousness. He produces and co-hosts a podcast on AI and consciousness with over 300,000 subscribers, bringing philosophical depth and cultural accessibility to the subject. Having followed this research from its inception, he brings the artistic vision necessary to translate these profound questions and encounters into a story that can reach beyond academic and scientific circles.
